Birth and the Soul Workshop

I am very excited that Benig Mauger, an author, psychotherapist and birth teacher, accepted my invitation to come to Yorkshire from Ireland to share her work.  Below are the details of the workshop  I am arranging for her at the Yorkshire Yoga Centre on the 7th and 8th October 2011.

Birth and the Soul  Healing Wounded Mothers.

A one day workshop plus private tuition or consultations.

Our modern birthing practice, preoccupation with the physical aspects of childbirth can mean overlooking the emotional, particularly the negative psychological effects of highly medicalised births. The inevitable focus is on making sure that a healthy baby is delivered of a healthy mother, at whatever cost. Is this cost too much to bear? The evidence suggests that when a woman experiences the birth of her child as difficult or harrowing, it results in emotional wounding in both mother and child. Such ‘soul’ wounds can take years to heal and have devastating consequences on families.

Highlighting the ‘loss of soul’ encountered by many due to our modern medicalised way of birth, Benig will explain how birth is a soul experience for both mother and child, and how negative birth experiences can be healed and transformed. This workshop presents birth and prenatal life as formative experiences that create patterns we carry with us into future life.

Additionally, pregnancy and childbirth are for the mother, archetypal experiences of transformation. Outlining the psychological impact of birth on both mother and child, Benig will suggest ways of healing birth wounds and creating fulfilling and empowering birth experiences in the future.

Day One: Birth and the Soul Workshop  Friday 7th October 2011. 10am-4:30pm.

This one-day workshop is open to all professionals working with pregnant and post natal women. It will be particularly relevant for midwives, health visitors, active birth instructors, Doulas, pregnancy and post natal yoga teachers.   Mothers who wish to explore and share their experiences are also very welcome to attend.

Participants will gain an understanding of the psychological and spiritual dimension of the birth process and its relevance to later life.  The workshop will aim to:

  •  Increase participants understanding of the psychological dimensions of Pregnancy, Birth and Prenatal life.
  • Heighten participants understanding of the spiritual and psychological significance of birth and how the experience informs later life.
  • Make participants aware of the psychological dynamics involved in a practitioner/client relationship during the birth process
  • Help participants develop the skills to put that knowledge to work within their fields.

Cost: £60. Please bring lunch to share, drinks will be provided.

Day 2: Private Consultations. Saturday 8th October 2011

On day two, Benig will be available for private consultations or small group sessions to explore the issues covered in the workshop, in more detail.  Here, participants can work with Benig on any issues that have arisen individually; for practitioners to explore particular areas in more detail or to get advice on how to deal with specific client situations.

One hour sessions are £75 and the cost can be shared if a number of people attend the session.

“Benig’s workshop was the best I have attended in a long time, a combination of deep inner work and physical play which included singing, dancing, writing and drawing….Benig has the ability to adapt to the participants’ needs, and the strength to guide the group to a compassionate whole. Her books are simple enough for the layman and yet complex enough to hold the attention of the clinical worker. Wonderful!” Singer and songwriter
