About yogamum

Why I started yogamum yoga classes

The birth of my first child, Johnnie in 2009 inspired me to start yogamum.

Practicing yoga when pregnant really helped me to connect with my unborn child and aided my preparation for childbirth.  My yoga practice has helped me to regain core strength, boost my energy levels (after endless sleepless nights!) and most importantly to savour and accept the life changes (emotional, physical, hormonal, social) that accompany new motherhood.

Practicing baby yoga has helped me bond with my son, helped his flexibility and motor development and has given us a lot of precious, fun times together.

Yoga encompasses a vast range of techniques to help you in your daily life and to unite the mind, body and spirit.  Through yogamum I humbly offer a range of ancient yoga practices adapted to help you and your baby at this precious time.    I aim to create a safe, warm and comfortable environment for you and your baby to have fun together.

My yoga

I have practiced yoga for over 15 years.  The majority of my teachers have been British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) teachers.  I completed the BWY Foundation Course in 2002 and I qualified as a British Wheel of Yoga teacher in 2006 (a four year part-time Diploma Course).

The British Wheel style of teaching is eclectic, taking techniques and practices from a range of yoga systems.  Over the years I have also had the opportunity to practice with teachers from a wide range of other yoga schools including Satyananda, Sivananda (staying at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala, India in 2007), Iyengar, Ashtanga, Dru and Bikram yoga.  I have a particular interest in mantra (chanting) and have had the opportunity of attending workshops with the Mantra expert Muz Murray.

In 2009/10 I successfully completed a “Postnatal recovery yoga with and without babies from birth to two” course with Uma Dinsmore-Tuli from the Sitaram Partnership. Uma is a leading and very inspirational Women’s Health yoga teacher and I am indebted to her for her teaching.

I also hold a Diploma in Pre and Post natal Yoga teaching from Classical Yoga (accredited by the Yoga Alliance), grade Distinction.

I am a Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI) with the International Association of Infant Massage.

I am the West Yorkshire County Representative for the British Wheel of Yoga and organise the Continuing Professional Development training courses for West Yorkshire teachers and as such get the opportunity to attend many CPD days with excellent teachers from across the UK.  I also organise other yoga and pregnancy related workshops with leading practitioners.
